We are running a charity poker tournament in the Esplanade Hotel, Bray on Friday 29 November at 8pm. Paddy Power Poker have very generously given us 3 Irish Open Super Satellite entries at a value of €215 each to add to the prize fund.
Support Africa Foundation works to develop agricultural methods, sustainable water supply, health and education in Ethiopia as these are the best means to improve people’s living standards in the long term. See: supportafrica.ie
Support Africa has focused heavily on empowering the women of Ethiopia to generate their own income. The flagship women's empowerment project which is based in Adigrat provides state of the art childcare for children of single parent families and training is undertaken by the mother for a 6 month period to enable them to start their own business or enter the workplace. After this training period the participants will engage in income generating activity with the majority running their own business in the local towns.
Support is given to the women in the format of micro finance, mentoring and weekly/monthly meetings with peers. Each year sees a new intake of women which allows for this project to make a large impact on this local community.
This fund raising is being undertaken to build a centre for the women of Adigrat. This fundraising has been undertaken primarily by a group of secondary school children in Bray, Ennikerry and North Wicklow. It has included or will include a “Strictly Ballroom” dance event, shopping centre bag packing, pub quizzes and golf events. The overall ambition is to raise in excess of €50,000.
Please note that ALL of the money raised in these events goes DIRECTLY to the Support Africa project.
The buy in structure is going to be €25 to prize fund and €25 to the charity. The organisers will pay for dealers, etc. and the hotel is provided free of charge. Players have the option of giving an additional €10 to the charity in exchange for a further 2,000 chips (on top of the starting stack of 8,000 chips).
The Irish Open Satellite entries provided by Paddy Power Poker are IN ADDITION to the prize fund. These will be added to 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes and make the tournament attractive from a pure poker point of view – with the added bonus of making a real difference to the lives of hundreds of Ethiopian women and their families.
The last time this event was run in 2012 it attracted 43 entries. If we make 50 entries this year the prize fund will be €38 per player - not bad for a €50 (or €60!) charity tournament.
You can register in advance by sending me a PM, at facebook.com/supportafricapoker or by texting 0872465564 with your name - this will help our planning - or of course just show up on the night!
